Its name, Beauport or Bellus Portus (Beautiful Port) expresses its exceptional coastal role as a place of pilgrimage and a maritime trading centre. For six centuries, the Abbey authorities built and extended this ideal site, with elegant yet functional architecture and rose gardens, fig trees, cider orchards, salt marshes and a sheltered port.
The Abbey of Beauport was acquired in 1992 by the Coastal and Lakeside Conservatory. Wishing to conserve the typical coastal environment (reed beds, harbour, dykes and spinney), the Conservatory took on the task of rehabilitating and restoring the abbey with the help of the Town of Paimpol, the Paimpol-Goelo Community of Communes and the Côtes d'Armor General Council.
